Baucau is ancient town and the second largest city in East Timor, dominated by the ruins of the impressive Herritage built of the Portuguese.

This town dominated building Portugal Herritage, with pyramid-shaped piles of potatoes, neat bunches of greens and mounds of maize forming a colourful patchwork on the pavement. Just below town, turn off the main road and follow the lush ravine 5km down to the beach at Osolata. Called Pantai Wataboo and other beach Bondura, it’s a series of white sand coves fringed by palms and hemmed by turquoise water.

There are plenty of activities to do in Baucau, and the good thing is, that everything is very cheap and hand-made! Everything here is extremely natural, from the people, who are so friendly to the small staffs. For instance, you can explore some older buildings portugues as the Hotel, Schools, Conservation Build and the Health Park.

which are structures from the colonial Portuguese days and somehow survived the Independence clashes and riots.

The Hotel, Schools, Conservation Build and the Health Park may have been quite grand and beautiful in their day, they now just provide a flashback to when the area was move vibrant. The Health Park may have been a beautiful garden, but is now slowly becoming overgrown and being absorbed back into the landscape.

However, nearby those old structures you can bump into some galleries like Arte Mores in Baucau which is an inspirational project that works with young men to develop their art skills. There are art classes three nights per week. The instruction is good and offered to school students both girls and boys to engage and motivate them. Speak to Marqui about the classes. There are also works for sale and you would be supporting a very good cause while collecting something unique.

Baucau is a wonderful place to stay as long as you love to. Even though, you can find a job connected to some donations or helping the locals. The food, the drinks and the coffee are so so good. You can visit a cafe, located in the heart of the old town, accessible by foot from just about anywhere, so it location is key.

Also, it has a nice back deck that provides you with a nice view of the mountain slope and gives you a refreshing breeze to cool off by. They have boiled fish, grilled fish and lots of other local rice and noodle dishes. The festive season is the best season to shop when heavy discounts and rebates are offered.

The beaches in Baucau are popular tourist attractions. The city is home to idyllic beaches and lovely reefs. The beaches are surrounded by rambling pine and coconut trees.

Some of the beaches also have rocky cliffs which are wonderful to look from a distance. Travelers can also enjoy various types of recreational activities in the beaches. There are provisions for various water sports like snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, scuba diving and so on. The beaches also have local dining spots where tourists can have a taste of delicious local and Asian cuisine. Freshly prepared seafood is also served.

There are beautiful beaches, rugged landscape and sprawling vegetation. These are popular Baucau tourist attractions.

Plenty of sightseeing tours are offered by the local tourist board as well as various travel agencies.

There are half day tours as well as single day tours. Most tours are made in cars or buses while walking tours are also available. Timor Leste People - Timor Leste City - Timor Leste Tourism - Timor Leste Beaches - East Timor People - East Timor City - East Timor Tourism - East Timor Beaches

4- Bishop Belo Returns To East Timor From Oslo - 1996
Published on Nov 21, 2013
Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo, (born February 3, 1948, Wailacama, East Timor), Roman Catholic bishop of Dili who, with José Ramos-Horta, received the 1996 Nobel Prize for Peace for their efforts to bring peace to East Timor (Timor Timur) during the period that it was under Indonesian control (1975--99).
5- Bishop Belo Report - East Timor 1999
12th November 1991
A powerful report on Bishop Belo, East Timor's most senior clergyman and his battle for his people. Oct 1991 people were running from Indonesian secret police. Shot man in Church. Archbishop Belo conducts funerals for the dead. Indonesian secret police surround the church as such ceremonies take place. Intimidation of those attending the Church results in recrimination and a dead man shot by the Indonesians. Protestors flood the streets and converge on the Santa Cruz cemetery where they pray over the dead mans grave. Indonesian police shoot and so the famous Dili massacre unfolds at Santa Cruz cemetary. Footage shows the Indonesians removing the wounded from the graveyard. Belo says many were killed after being wounded. Footage of Belo visiting Europe. Images of Portuguese colonial life shows Belos early life, when he was a buffalo herder and through to his acceptance by the church. Powerful images of the resistance indicate Belos early alliance with the resistance movement. The Church is shown to have had an unusually close relationship with the Timorese resistance movement. Many extraordinary images show the strange fault line that was drawn between the resistance with the church in the middle and the Indonesians on the other side. A horde of stone throwing Indonesian police attacking a church tells the story like no other could.

An activity mastered and performed solely by Timorese women, with techniques passed from generation to generation, is weaving of cotton threads to create a colorful piece of cloth called Tais.

Considered an integral part of East Timor cultural heritage, Tais cloth is used for traditional clothing, home décor, ceremonial adornment and most importantly, before the introduction of standard currency, it was used as a means of trading livestock.
Predominant designs are geometric patterns called kaif and predominant color used is red which symbolizes long life and courage following local belief.
Though these days, tais decorated home or tais clothed individuals are rarely found at the street of Dili, however for those who wanted to have authentic patterned cloth for souvenir can head to Colmera and look for a small compound of pink walls and roofing called Dili Tais Market.
Open everyday, Dili Tais Market sells high quality cloth, wooden carvings of Cristo Rei, rosary beads, swords, silver, t-shirts and other souvenir items embellished with the country flag.
A family run business, the vendors and the store owners are all very welcoming. They let you wander around their shops without the pressure of having to buy something, a total opposite in ambiance compare to the other touristy markets where looking around without buying anything is a source of annoyance to the vendor.
Here, you can witness the actual weaving of textile or see kids playing around the market. During my visit, there were only three or four of us at the whole vicinity and the vendors couldn’t careless if you buy anything or not, they are quite busy playing bingo.
Tais can be bought as a textile, as a handbag, wallet or earrings. According to some reports, there is an inflow of tais-looking textile in the local market sold for way cheaper price, which resulted to confusion among buyers who is hoping to bring home the genuine Timorese tais.
When I first saw tais cloth I was confused on how this pattern available on other South East Asian country can be of Timorese heritage, I even have a bag bought in Laos which look exactly as the one on the display. I guess the confusion and the lack of awareness for most outsiders like me has to be attributed to the lack of written documentation or information about East Timor in general due to the decade long restriction and occupation of Portugal and Indonesia.
For a country which relies heavily on export, buying a Timorese product whether it is Tais or organic coffee not only help the livelihood of local women or families but most importantly, it helps keep nation tradition and identity.
